Juice machines:

After several months of research we really think we’ve found the best machines available on the market today.

The machine that we recommend is the Oscar vital mix in chrome. It is available from us for £245 (inc. P &P) and includes juice recipes and information about what is best to juice and what’s best not juiced.

Background and information to consider when choosing a juice machine:

There are three basic types of juice machine:
- centrifuge
- single auger
- twin auger

Centrifuge machines are universally available in most stores selling kitchen appliances (Argos, John Lewis, Curry’s etc.). If your budget really is limited then this could be the way to start. For £40-£60 you can buy something that works.

Advantages

- Cost
- Speed

Disadvantages

- Centrifuge wears out
- Higher speeds means juice is heated (depletes nutrients)
- No Wheatgrass capability

Single auger machines have an auger, a bit like an old meat mincer that slices the vegetables as they are fed down a chute and then presses them against a metal gauze. These can only usually be purchased via the internet or specialist stores.

Advantages

- Slow speed for maximum nutrients
- Easy, quick washing
- Durable parts
- Juices wheatgrass
- Reasonable cost (£100 -£250)

Disadvantages

- Takes slightly longer
- Reduced output in some machines

Twin auger machines are considered in some circles to be the Rolls Royce, Bentley, Porsche, Ferrari (whatever!) of juicers. Vegetables are passed between two very closely positioned gear wheels. They are certainly the most expensive machines and only available through specialist sellers.

Advantages

- v. high juice yield Size!
- Juice can be stored
- Possible increased bio-availability of minerals
- Juices wheatgrass
- Durability

Disadvantages

- They are BIG.
- Cleaning / assembly time
- Strength required to push veg through gear wheels
- Pricey (!) (£320-350)

One machine does however have a lot of pluses and few minuses under pinned by a long manufacturer’s warranty. The Oscar Vital mix is a single auger machine with a double layer metal gauze. This means that you get a high juice yield at low temperatures from a compact machine that is easy to clean.

Summary:

So with these factors in mind our recommendations are:
- If your budget is tight or you just want to try juicing consider buying a centrifuge machine from an electrical goods retailer or the internet.

- If juicing wheatgrass is important and you want high nutrient levels go for a single auger juicer. We stock a range of these from £100 to £245. See a comparison table>>>>>

- If maximum nutrient extraction is essential and you have the time to wash and clean go for a twin auger machine.
